Montane Dynamo Jacket

What the manufacturer says:

Lightweight, multi-activity, soft-shell jacket.  This incredibly versatile jacket combines low bulk and high durability with exceptional comfort and performance in use.

What we say:

This is a great all-rounder; perfect for trail sports as it has great technical ability and excellent as an everyday jacket with a good cut and a selection of well placed pockets - two zipwaist side pockets and a useful vertical zip breast pocket (great for phone or keys) .  The soft shell material breaths effortlessly and shrugs off light rain, it is also comfortable and is so light there is no reason why you would not take it along on all but the most minimalist of missions.  A high collar and two way zip also contribute the style and functionality of this great bit of kit.

In summary:

The Dynamo jacket is sure to become an outdoor wardrobe staple.

Score:

9/10

Inov-8 Debrisoc 38

What the manufacturer says:

Anatomically designed single piece gaiter sock designed to prevent dirt and grit from entering the shoe when running. Fast and quick drying Coolmax with padded areas giving extra cushioning and protection. Replacement Rubber Gaiter Fasteners are available to buy as accessories from selected retailers or directly from inov-8 or our distributors. The rings are easily replaced by removing the velcro strip on the inside of the retaining strap.

What we say:

Now and again a bit of kit comes along that really blows you away and makes you wonder how you ever managed with out it.  Debrisocs are such a bit of kit.  Running off road invariably means mud, twigs, stones, sand, gravel getting wedged between ankle and shoe.  At best an inconvenience, at worst painful or even dangerous.  These remarkable socks do away with all that and provide a really well thought out care free way of keeping unwanted bits and bobs out of your shoes.  They also keep your ankle snug and warm and keep the top of your trail shoes clean and your laces neatly tucked away.  The built in sock is good quality and works well, wicking away moisture and providing some cushioning.

In summary:

Debris socks are my favorite piece of trail kit and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed if you invest in a pair.

Inov-8 Roclite 295

What the manufacturer says:

Trail running shoe with high levels of comfort, breathability and performance. The patent pending Fascia-band aids propulsion efficiency of the running cycle. Good underfoot cushioning makes the 295 ideal for hard surface tracks and trails.

What we say:

I have been wearing my pair of Roclite 295's for 8 weeks now both on and off the trails. Previously I had been wearing Salomon XA Pro 3D's which I have now relegated to kayaking in. It is worth mentioning that I have size 12 flat feet.

The Roclite 295's are a handsome shoe and like the rest of the innov-8 range their modest but stylish looks betray their true nature. Like a trained pet tiger these shoes look pretty and will let you stroke them, but let them out into the wild and they are man eaters!

Out of the box I was impressed with how lite they felt in my hands. I put them on and was immediately in foot heaven! The only way I can describe it is like wearing your favorite slippers but with an obscene amount of grip.

After my first run, a short six mile night run along the coastal path near Dartmouth in Devon, I was doubly impressed. I felt lighter on my feet than ever before and the superb grip gave me the confidence to go faster than I normaly would in low light conditions. The shoes coped well on both the muddy stretches and any rocky sections - in fact so much so that I didn't feel it necessary to adjustment to my stride or style, as I normally would, to compensate for the changing surface type. I didn't feel any disadvantages on the harder more compacted parts of the trail and on any road sections - the balance between foot feel and cushioning seemed to be just right. At a couple of miles into my run I stepped in deep puddles up to my ankles, but any water drained instantly and my feet felt comfortable for the remaining four miles.

In summary:

I have been wearing my pair of Roclite 295's for 8 weeks now both on and off the trails. In fact I haven't really taken them off (they look great with jeans), except to wash them when they get really muddy - but then my feet long for them. For this reason I have just ordered a second pair.

Additional comments:

I have now been wearing my pair of Roclite 295's for 12 weeks. At the weekend I completed a 16.5 Mile winter trail running race on Dartmoor. The weather was hideous - snow, sleet and hail. The course was savage - rocky, muddy, slippery and very wet. The course planer had set the route to follow a stream bed that I think had been dry the day before but when we got to it was shin deep in fast running freezing water. We had to run down it for a good mile or so and this was right at the start of the race. Oh how I laughed at all of the silly folk who had turned out in road shoes. I was having a scream and felt like a four wheel drive warrior as I sped past at least ten runners who were struggling with wet rocks and shoes that were filling up like buckets! My Inov-8's drained completely within a coupe of paces and I felt no discomfort from wet feet for the remaining 12 miles.

All in all these shoes are fantastic! Super light, super grippy on all surfaces and very comfortable on road sections too! After the race they were unrecognizable from all the mud and dirt. I shoved them in the washing machine on 40 with the rest of my kit and they have come out like new!

Get some you will love them!  - Andrew Barker

Im used to club road racing, longer distances usually & switching to trails since being in the South West has been so refreshing. Thank you for organising such a successful event. Ive experienced many different races & you have managed an excellent balance of friendliness & organisation. With three distances on the same time that sounds like no mean feat.
