30/08/2010: Please click here for the latest SW Coast 2 Coast update for both Extreme and Classic participants.

Please Note: The deadline for booking transport from the finish to the start before the event is Wednesday the 1st of September. Please follow the instructions in the update to book transport.
Introduction

The South West Coast 2 Coast (SWC2C) is an epic self propelled, 140m mile multi-sport traverse of Britain's largest and most beautiful peninsular. The SWC2C follows an un-contrived, linear route from the spectacular sea cliffs at the northern tip of Devon, to the jagged, wave crushed shore at Prawle Point on the southern extremity of the county.

Coast 2 Coasters trail run, road cycle, off-road mountain bike and kayak their way across the county on a course that takes in renowned sections of the famous South West Coast Path, two spectacular National Parks; Exmoor and Dartmoor, before finishing in a sublimely beautiful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The South Hams. The route also includes an ascent of the highest peak in Southern England and a kayak decent of one of the countries most beautiful waterways, the Dart Estuary. This one has it all.

Now in its 7th year, the SWC2C has become an absolute must-do, bench-mark UK endurance challenge that attracts an eclectic mix of adventurous outdoor athletes; from triathletes and endurance challenge all-rounders, to hardened adventure racers and ambitious weekend warriors looking for a big test.

The event has developed a big reputation not only for the scale of the challenge it represents and the spectacular nature of the course, but also for the fantastic atmosphere and sense of camaraderie it generates amongst the participants and supporting crew.  If you believe that life is about the journey, this one is for you.

The SWC2C can be attempted by solo participants or teams of two as either a very challenging, continuous, one day effort (SWC2C Extreme) or in the original two day format (SWC2C Classic). NEW for 2010 is the Relay Team of 3 category offered in the Extreme only.

The SWC2C is limited to only 120 places in each category due to environmental and logistical considerations.  The event sells out quickly each year.  To guarantee your place in 2010, book now.

The Extreme  -  Non-Stop: 140+ mile (225+ km)

The Extreme Challenge - Complete the original Coast 2 Coast, non-stop in under 20 hours solo, as a team of 2 or a self supported relay team of 3.

This is the chance to push your limits and undertake a classic UK challenge.  It is simple - cross the South West peninsular of Britain on foot, bike and kayak in one continuous, epic journey.

The all new relay team of 3 category is a fantastic opportunity for motivated teams to take on this highly respected challenge. All the details regarding the route are below. Relay teams of 3 must have a pair on the course at any one time, team members may swap in and out at the transitions at the end of each section as required / prefered. The 3rd person when not competing on a leg can rest / help the support driver. The 3rd person can also be the support driver if required. Please Note: Relay teams require a support vehicle in attendance for the duration of the challenge and must manage their own kit and equipment. (Double kayaks are supplied)

The Route

Start Time:  22:00  (Friday, 10th September 2010)

Cut Off  1:   09:00 - CP8  (Midway Point / Stage 5 Start - Princetown)
Cut Off 2:    12:00 - CP11  (Kayak Put-In - Totnes)
Cut Off 3:    19:00 - CP14  (Stage 7 Run Midway Point - Torcross)

Stage 1: Running - 9 miles / 14.5km (mixed terrain)

This first stage takes runners on a multi-terrain loop from the Event Base at Brendon, out to Foreland Point and back.  This 'warm-up' section involves some lovely trail running alongside a wooded river valley, before ascending to give fantastic vews of this stunning coastline of Devon.  The route then descends to the Foreland Point lighthouse, the northern-most point of the county.

The route returns to the Event Base via footpaths and forest tracks.  By no means an easy run due to the undulating nature of the topography and tricky terrain.  The welcomed sight of the Event Base leads competitors into their first Transition and onto their bikes.

The course follows an anti-clockwise route, which is marked out with signage.

Stage 2: Cycling - 55 miles / 88km (road)

The longest stage of the event has participants riding through the simply majestic Exmoor National Park.  One of the lesser known NPs of Britain, people who live there or already know the area will vouch for its remarkable beauty.  Expect to see expansive views over moorland with steep sided valleys cutting into it.  Be aware of Exmoor ponies and sheep on the roads as you climb and descend your way across the landscape.

On leaving Exmoor, you will immediately be weaving your way down quiet country lanes that typify the Devon landscape.  Undulating topography, river valleys, steep sided hedged banks, and vivid autumn colours will be all evident on this section.  When Dartmoor appears on the horizon, look out for its highest peak - to later be negotiated, High Willhays (621m).

The route then passes through the market town of Okehampton and joins 'cycleway 27'.  This traffic free nature trail follows the disused railway line, lined by wild flowers, to take riders directly onto Dartmoor.  After crossing Meldon Viaduct, the next Transition soon approaches.

For this section participants should be able to navigate the route, utilising the detailed narrative and maps provided.

Stage 3: Trail / Mountain Running - 4miles / 6.4km (trail / fell)

A short run from Transition at Meldon Reservoir leads up to the summit of High Willhays, the highest peak in southern England.  This climb of over 1100ft (340m) passes over terrain typically found on Dartmoor.  The coarse heather, grassy tusocks, and boggy moorland can make the going very tough.  After reaching the summit, a brief moment to admire the view, and it's back down to Transition.

Stage 4: Cycling - 23 miles / 37km (road)

The route continues along the disused railway of cycleway 27, that contours the edge of Dartmoor. It then ducks inland towards Lydford Gorge, a magnificent natural wonder cut into the countryside.  Cyclists return towards Dartmoor, with yet more climbing and descending.  The final stretch of road works its way agonisingly towards Princetown and expect some glorious views across the expansive bleak landscape of Dartmoor.

For this section participants should be able to navigate the route, utilising the detailed narrative and maps provided.

Midway Point:  Princetown
Cut Off 1:         09:00 Saturday
Bag Access:  Transition Bag 1

Participants must arrive at the Midway Point by 09:00 midday, allowing 11 hours to complete Stages 1-4.  Participants failing to arrive by the cut off time will not be allowed to continue in the event.

At the Midway Point participants are strongly encouraged to take a short rest and to re-fuel (tea, fluids, hot water and snacks available).  There will be opportunity to access Transition Bag 1 and  and to attend to bikes/equipment if neccessary (ie, change over tyres/wheels from slicks to off-road).

Please note: This is a timed stop-over, so the clock will still be ticking.

Stage 5: Mountain Biking - 23 miles / 37km (mixed terrain)

A real mixed bag of terrain, allowing for some superb mountain biking.  Starting off by crossing grassy moorland, the route then follows a network of bridleways, green lanes and quiet back roads to find its way to Totnes.  Technical in places, this section is a mountain bikers paradise and will require an aggressive tread on the tyre to cope with the conditions if it has been wet in the run up to the challenge.

For this section participants should be able to navigate the route, utilising the detailed narrative and maps provided.

Cut Off 2:      12:00 Saturday
Bag Access:   Transition Bag 2

Participants must arrive at the Kayak Put-In by 12:00, allowing 14 hours to complete Stages 1-5.  Participants failing to arrive by the cut off time will not be allowed to continue in the event.  Participants will be able to access Transition Bag 2.  This must then be carried with you down to Kayak Get-Out at Dartmouth and the final transition.

Stage 6: Kayaking - 8 miles / 13km (estuary)

A simply stunning paddle down one of the finest estuaries in England, the River Dart estuary.  Tree and flower clad banks will accompany you as you weave your way towards the picturesque town of Dartmouth.

For this section participants should be able to navigate the route, utilising the detailed narrative and maps provided.

Sat 11 Sept (BST):
Low Water - 02:27 (0.2m)
High Water - 08:35 (5.7m)
Low Water - 14:44 (0.3m)

Stage 7: Trail Running - 19 miles / 30km (mixed terrain)

This run is a true epic.  Brutal yet beautiful.  This will sap any remaining energy from you, but will fill you will elation as you cross the finish line.  On this section of the journey, you will encounter golden coves, rocky cliff lines, the majestic vista of Start Bay and Slapton Sands, and some of the best trail running terrain in the country!  Simple - 19 showcase miles of the world re-knowned South West Coast path.

For this section participants should be able to navigate the route, utilising the detailed narrative and maps provided.

Classic Two-Day Route: 140+ mile (225+ km)

The Classic Challenge - Complete the original Coast 2 Coast in two days solo or as a team of two.

Getting to the Event

Car:  This is the easiest way to travel to the event.  The Start and Finish locations are particularly out of the way and difficult (although not impossible) to reach via public transport.  We do however strongly advocate car sharing, better for the environment, share travel costs, more sociable....we all know why it is better.  If you are looking for a lift or have a space in your car, why not post a message on our community for others to read?

Public Transport:  For the latest and up-to-date information on public transport arrangements, please contact the tourism information offices at Lynton (North Devon) and Kingsbridge (South Devon) respectively.

Parking (Event Duration)

Recommended

We strongly recommend that you park at the Finish location (South Devon) for the duration of the event.  From here you are able to benefit from the arranged transport option to bring you and your kit up to the Start location.  After many years of running the C2C Devon, we have found this to be the most convenient and suitable option for you.  We take care of all the travel logistics once you arrive, and you have your car and warm, dry kit waiting awaiting you at the finish.

Finish location:  East Prawle village, near Kingsbridge, South Devon. TQ7 2BY.

Getting there:  East Prawle is the southern-most village in Devon and is by no means quick and easy to get to.  When making your travel arrangements please add on at least an hour to your journey time, as the Devon lanes are notoriously twisty and susceptible to congestion and /or getting lost!  On entering East Prawle village, please follow the event signs to the designated parking area.  Directions.

Alternatively

You can park at the Start location in North Devon, and make your own arrangements to travel back up after the event.

Start location:  Brendon village, near Lynton, North Devon. EX35 6PS.

Getting there:  Directions

Please note:  If parking at the Start or Finish, your vehicle is left at your own risk.

Transport (Recommended)

Please Note: The bus transport is an optional service and provided at a cost of £20.  This must be booked as an 'Add-On' from your Endurancelife personal account.
Departure Time:  15:00 (Friday 10 September)

On arrival at the Finish and event parking location of East Prawle village, you will be met and greeted by an Endurancelife Crew member.  They will advise you as to where to park.  You will be asked to prepare your bike and kit ready for transportation.

Once your bike and kit bag are loaded into the event trailers (Endurancelife Crew will assist), you will need to board the arranged bus ready to a prompt departure .  The Endurancelife kit trailers will then accompany the bus up to North Devon.

This is a fantastic service and reduces the stress of pre-event logistics.  We strongly recommended that you book soon to guarantee your place on the bus.

Firstly, many thanks to you and your team for putting on a great event. I thought the course was challenging to say the least (brutal springs to mind!!) but it wasn't impossible with solid training and most importantly it was still fun. You and your team should be commended for the encouragement and help throughout the event, really makes a huge difference.

Wai Yui Chan - C2C Classic 2009

Hey Guys!

Just to say thank you for an epic, yet totally brilliant weekend.  It was a fantastic course - varied, challenging and incredibly beautiful: we were definitely pushed right to our limits, yet there was always just the right amount of support from the team.  It was without doubt the nuttiest thing I've ever done but as soon as we saw those torches up on the cliff at Prawle Point after 21.5 hours of pretty much non-stop action we were already deciding to come back and do it all again next year...

Jenny Timms - C2C Extreme 2009

I'm not sure who this email will be delivered to using this address..but i just wanted to write a quick mail to say a HUGE thank you for this weekend in Devon. It was the first time I had done an event through Endurancelife and it was AWESOME!!! I had such a great weekend - it was tough and definitely challenging, but a wonderful atmosphere and incredibly well organised!!!

I managed to catch my flight back to Ireland ok and was back at work Monday morning - in body anyway! Have been reminiscing ever since and telling everyone who I can get to listen..!!

Well done for all the hard work and planning that obviously went into this event - it's been an unforgettable weekend and I can once again only say, "THANKS"!!!

Shirley Pim - C2C Classic 2009

The Extreme was brilliant! The course maps perfect, the hills beautifully described!!! Only positive things to say. Really well run and a great adventure.

Doug Lang - C2C Extreme 2009

That was a really great event – good route and a great variety of riding and running. Our pre-race strategy was to make the cut offs and we were surprised to be doing so well. I think being on cyclocross bikes helped tremendously and I would advise anyone to go down that route. There is certainly nothing I would change in the route or the format and if you can arrange the same weather next year that would be great! In fact I really can't praise the route highly enough.

Many thanks and congratulations on another life-enhancing event. The many elements of the Challenge came together to make a truly excellent and memorable couple of days. We competitors were fortunate with the weather and the tidal stream, but even without that it would have been such a well organised and good-natured (though competitive) event that it was well worth the pain of the last miles of hill up to Princetown and pace-sapping unevenness of the coast path to Prawle. Thank you for your unstinting good humor and support.
